For : Days after the service tax department held an auction to sell embattled businessman Vijay Mallya’s personal jet, little-known SGI Commex on Wednesday said it emerged as the ‘successful bidder’ at a price of Rs 27.39 crore ($ 4.1 million), which is nearly one-sixth of the reserve price.
SGI Commex chairman G S Srivastava, an art connoisseur, said the aircraft, an Airbus A319-133 with registration of CJ VT-VJM, will be converted into an art pilgrimage venture under the label of ‘Beyond the Obvious’ and that it will not be used as a private carrier.
Srivastava said he has helped corporatise and uplift the art market with his landmark deal of the M F Hussain work ‘Our Planet Called Earth Series’. He plans to utilise the aircraft to promote exotic art work ingrained in various temples and religious places across the country through religious tourism, particularly among foreigners.The latest auction, held as part of the efforts of the department to recover over Rs 800 crore dues, took place on August 18 after an earlier auction failed on June 30.
The Service Tax department had set Rs 152 crore as the reserve price during both the auctions for the jet, which once served as the private aircraft of the flamboyant businessman.
In the first attempt at auction, a Dubai-based company had offered just Rs 1 crore, which was turned down.
In a statement, the city-based SGI Commex said it has emerged as the successful bidder for the aircraft auction held by MSTC on behalf of the service tax department on August 18, with a bid of 4.1 million. It further said another USD 3.5 million is estimated to be required to make the aircraft ‘air-worthy’.
The auction of the jet was challenged by Mumbai Airport at the Bombay High Court claiming unpaid airport fees. As per an order passed on August 22, SGI Commex will have to pay an additional amount towards taxes, hangar charges and the cost of equipment to be installed to make the aircraft air-worthy.
The order, uploaded on the high court website yesterday, was passed by judges B P Colabawalla and S C Dharmadhikari.The High Court has posted the matter for final disposal to September 13.
When contacted, a service tax department official, however, said a final decision will be taken by CBEC on whether to challenge the HC order or not. A final decision on whether to accept the bid or not is also pending, he maintained.
“We have reservations about the Rs 27 crore bid as this is much lower than our reserved price of Rs 152 crore or USD 22.5 million. That position has been brought to notice of the Bombay HC,” the official told reporters.
The department, which has over Rs 800 crore dues from Kingfisher Airlines, had attached the plane in December 2013.
Kingfisher Airlines has been grounded since October 2012.
The only bidder at the first auction was a UAE-based aviation support firm, Alna Aero Distributional Finance Holdings, which made an offer of Rs 1.09 crore for the jet.
After the failure of the first auction, the joint pricing committee comprising additional commissioner of the department and officials from the Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence had decided not to lower the reserve level.
Mallya owes over Rs 9,000 crore, which includes unpaid loans and accrued interest, to 17 banks.

Private jet from Texas crashes in Honduras, all survive

A private jet traveling from Austin, Texas, crashed off the end of the runway of the Honduran capital's international airport and broke in half Tuesday, but the crew and passengers were rescued and reportedly out of danger.

Video images posted online showed what appeared to be area residents pulling people out of the damaged fuselage of the white Gulfstream jet, while others sprayed it with hand-held fire extinguishers.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and doused the wreckage with foam. Part of the plane appeared in photos to lie across a street.

The FlightAware website said the flight originated in the Texas capital Tuesday morning, and that was later confirmed by the Honduran Civil Aviation Agency.

A woman from Texas who flew by private jet to join Donald Trump supporters rioting at the U. S. Capitol had one of her business signs vandalised. Jenna Ryan, a real estate broker and radio host from Frisco, flew to Washington, D. C. to "storm the Capitol". She has since faced intense backlash online for going to the protest and documenting it on social media. Five people including a police officer died after Donald Trump supporters stormed the building in Washington, D. C. on Wednesday. What began as a "Stop the Steal" demonstration, during which Trump addressed the crowds and continued to push his unfounded claims of election fraud, turned into a violent siege on Capitol Hill. Now, one of her realtor advertising signs has been vandalised in Carrollton, a city just outside of Dallas and only a few miles south of Frisco. Someone had blacked out her face and written "Trumper" and the expletives "wh***" and "c***". A photo of the trashed sign was shared on Twitter and the photographer, who wished to remain anonymous, said it was taken at around 3.30 p.m. on Sunday but by 6 p.m. it had been removed. It comes after Ryan shared a statement online to say she was invited to the march for what she thought would be a peaceful protest and that she does not support violence. She wrote: "I am a conservative Republican radio host from Dallas, Texas who loves the USA. On my show, The Jenna Ryan Show I openly discuss my political views as well as the views of others. I was invited to go to Washington D. C. by a friend to witness the march. Unfortunately, what I believed to be a peaceful political march turned into a violent protest."I do not condone the violence that occurred on January 6, 2020 and I am truly heartbroken for the people who have lost their lives. Hatred and violence toward each other are not going to solve our country's issues."As a nation, we need to come together Republican, Democrat and Independent and have an open and honest discussion about the issues in our country and resolve our issues in peace."Ryan had come under fire after flying to D. C. in a private jet and documenting the protest online. Along with a photo that showed her next to a jet at US Trinity Aviation in Denton, Texas, she wrote: "Hopping on a plane heading to DC #MarchToSaveAmerica #stopthesteal."On Facebook, Ryan livestreamed the walk to Capitol Hill, saying: "All these working-class people taking the week off … We flew here for freedom. They want to steal the election, they want to steal everything."The conservative radio host also posted a photo of herself in front of a broken window at the Capitol, with the caption: "Window at The capital. And if the news doesn't stop lying about us we're going to come after their studios next."Later, she wrote on Twitter: "We just stormed the capital. It was one of the best days of my life." As the rescues arrived, they doused the plane with foam, although it’s unclear if the fire had broken out before or after the crash. The destination of the plane and the cause of the crash are also unknown at the moment. Earlier that morning, the plane left Austin, Texas, for Honduras, according to the aviation records.
